Castles in Slovakia

Castles and towers start to be built after the tartar invasion since half of 13th century.
Originally royal castles were later acquired by nobility. Except for defensive function, they had also economic and administrative function.
With the growing development of the military technique castles started to loose their significance and became desolated.

Since 16th century nobility started to build more comfortable settlements in their bottoms. More than 100 medieval castles gradually changed to ruins. In those that were preserved or reconstructed are today museum expositions.

Among the most beautiful castles of Slovakia belong:
Red Stone castle, Orava castle, Bojnice castle, Trencin castle, Krasna Horka castle
