Caves in Slovakia

The caves are remarkable natural phenomena, which address by their singularities the general public as well as specialists of various orientation. They can be characterized as notable geomorphological phenomena with plentiful calcite, aragonite or ice fill.
The Slovak Caves Administration manages the protection of show caves and future show caves in Slovakia and their safe and sustainable use.

Among the most beautiful caves of Slovakia belong:
Demanovska Ice cave, Demanovska cave of Liberty, Belianska cave, Dobsinska cave

Belianska Cave
is the only cave in High Tatra Mountains open to public. The Belianska Cave, known by gold seekers as early as the first half of the 18th century, is located in an attractive environment of the Tatra National Park, in the eastern part of the national nature reserve Belianske Tatry. Pagoda stalagmites and flowstone waterfalls more than 50 m long dominate the show path.


Bystrianska cave
Situated on the southern side of the Low Tatras close to the tourism centres Tale and Myto pod Dumbierom. The cave have an abyss character with dominating flowstone curtains hanging on calcite crusts. Some parts of the Bystrianska Cave are used for speleotherapy since 1971.


Demanovska cave of Liberty
located in Demanovska valley and is considered to be the most beautiful cave in the Low Tatras. This case is very attractive for visitors because of their formation, various stalactites, stalagmites, lakes



Demanovska ice cave - one of the first known caves of the world.
the cave entrance is located in the cliff Bašta on the northern side of the Low Tatras Mts., only two kilometers northerly from the Demänovská Cave of Liberty. Ice fill has been formed in the cave for the last 500 years and in combination with calcite decoration the cave offers a very interesting tour


Dobsinska ice cave
situated in the Spis-Gemer karst, in the national nature reserve Stratena, and by the character of glaciation belongs among the most important caves in the world. Ice fill occurs here in various forms and ice thickness reaches in some places 26 meters.


Domica cave
close to the state boundary with Hungary there is the Domica Cave, forming a single genetic unit with the Hungarian Baradla Cave. Except for the typical flowstone shields, drums and rimstone lakes, the visitors admire underground boat ride on the Styx River.


Driny Cave
the only show cave in the western Slovakia. It is located in the Smolenice karst in the Lesser Carpathians, to the southwest of Smolenice. The mysterious hole in the earth was known for the local people already in the 19-th century, but only in 1932 they dared to enter underground. Flowstone draperies with indented facing are typical for this cave.


Gombasecka cave
located between Rožňava and Plešivec in the Slovak Karst National Park and Biospheric Reserve. Dominant elements in the Gombasecká Cave are thin and hollow straw stalactites reaching the maximum length of about 3m and in some places they are so dense that they remind a stone rain.

Harmanecka cave
a serpentine path leads from the state road in direction Banská Bystrica - Turčianske Teplice to the Harmanecká Cave. The entrance part called Izbica was known to local woodcutters and workers from long ago, however the cave was discovered only in 1932. White soft flowstone dominates the cave and it is one of the most important localities of bat occurrence in Slovakia.


Jasovská Cave
located in the Medzev Upland in the western part of the Košice Basin. The cave became the first show cave in Slovakia in 1846, however the upper parts had been known as early as the 13th century and the inscription from 1452, which records the victory of Ján Jiskra’s from Brandýs military force, represents the oldest written mention in Slovak caves.


Ochticka cave
is a specific phenomenon also from the world caves perspective, which attracts every visitor by its variability, wealth and beauty of aragonite fill. It is located on the northern slope of the Hrádok Hill in the Slovak Ore Mountains on the road between Štítnik and Jelšava, 26 km from RoĹľňava. It is the only one of its kind in Europe and stands out by aragonite fills of various forms.


Vazecka cave
located between Liptovský Mikuláš and Poprad. The cave represents an important palaeontological finding place of cave bear bones (Ursus spelaeus), which was bigger and heavier than present brown bear. The sculpture in life size is newly installed in the cave.
