If you have family roots in Slovakia, you can arrange to have a private tour of the towns where your ancestors resided.

Our tour guide was Peter Blazicek, the CEO and founder of Best Slovakia Tours, and he was assisted by Judy Northup-Bennett from Massachusetts who is the founder of the Slovakia Heritage Tour. Peter and his wife Jane are very organized and communicate and confirm everything about the tour via emails, and they provided a detailed itinerary for every day of the tour. Peter is fluent in English, and he and Judy are very friendly and happy to talk about Slovakia and its people.

The hotels on the tour are great, ranging from the Radisson Blu Carlton Hotel in Bratislava, the Grand Hotel Stary Smokovec in the High Tatras, and the DoubleTree Hilton Hotel in Kosice, to the provincial-style Hotel pod Branou in Bardejov.

The restaurants that Peter selected and the ones that he recommends are excellent. I liked every meal, and there is always a selection of traditional and modern dishes.

My father, aunt, and my grandparents are from Spisska Nova Ves and the surrounding towns. We took a private tour of the area with Michal Razus, who is a genealogist and a partner of Best Slovakia Tours. Peter and Jane helped us contact Miroslav Stevik, who is the historian of the Spis Museum in Spisska Nova Ves. Miro researched our family’s history in the area and gave us a detailed presentation, plus a walking tour of the town.

We are already talking about a personal follow-up tour to Spisska Nova Ves and other towns that are part of our family’s heritage, plus we would like to revisit some of our favorite Slovakian sites. I highly recommend Best Slovakia Tours and the Slovakia Heritage Tour in particular.

It was my first-ever group trip and first time to Slovakia and I wasn’t sure what to expect. This tour was expertly organized and all stops, whether cultural visits, hotels, or eateries, were well-selected.

Peter, Jane and Judy curated deeply meaningful experiences for us to learn about Slovak history and culture from small village museums and cultural festivals to musical performances. Because Peter, Jane and Judy have built solid relationships with the artisans and caretakers of these very special heritage spots, we were invited in for very special experiences that we never would have been able to replicate if we had traveled on our own.

Our experience was also enhanced greatly in getting to know our fellow group travelers who were truly wonderful. A number of us signed up for the tour seeking information about Slovak ancestors but I think the tour was enjoyed both by those with and without that interest.

I’d like to commend Peter, Jane and Judy for their extra assistance connecting me with relatives in Eastern Slovakia. Jane’s extra effort made all the difference in us having a truly magical excursion.

If you’re considering traveling on any of Peter and Jane’s tours, I could not give them higher commendation. They get all the details right but, much more than that, they lead tours with real meaning.

Bestslovakiatours was an excellent company to deal with – in the planning stage my emails were answered promptly and thoughtfully by Peter, Jane and later Judy. The notes and tour itinerary descriptions were comprehensive and very useful.
Peter was an excellent guide during the tour, he made history come alive for me with his knowledge and explanations. The tour was well paced, and well planned in that it provided a variety of sights and tastes so that I gained a delightful understanding of Slovakia, its people and culture. The restaurants were well chosen to give a variety of local foods to taste. There were very thoughtful ‘surprises’ along the way which made it a most delightful trip.

Peter and Jana are a husband-and-wife team who clearly love their country and take great pride in their work. Judy, their partner in the USA, made planning from home easy and they were all very responsive to our questions.

The tour was very well thought out. In ten days we saw Banská Štiavnica, Orava Castle, the High Tatras, Bardejov, Levoča, Košice, Spiš Castle and Bratislava, with good food, folk music and dance along the way. The pace was just right – busy enough to see a lot, with free time to explore on our own.
What stood out most was how flexible they were. The group is kept small (about 16–18 people), so it never felt like a big bus tour. They also offer side trips you can add on. We added the cable car ride up Lomnický Štít and a private day in Spišská Nová Ves, where our grandparents were born. Peter arranged a guide-driver, Michal, who also translated for us, and he helped us visit the town and the nearby villages at a slow, easy pace. Standing where our family came from was very moving. We even had lunch with distant relatives that Michal connected us with!

If you have Slovak roots, or just want to see a beautiful and less-visited part of Europe, I highly recommend this tour. If I could rate them on a 10-point scale, I’d give them an 11! Thank you, Peter, Jana and Judy!

We are in the United States while Peter (Best Slovakia Tours) is in Bratislava so we did all our planning communications via email. It went perfectly. Peter listened to all my wants and was very easy to work with. I should also mention how I discovered Best Slovakia Tours: Michal R is a leading genealogist in Slovakia. He was even referred to me by the head librarian at the National Czech & Slovak Museum & Library in Iowa when I was there last year. I contacted Michal to see if he could be our guide while in Slovakia. He could not but he highly recommended I contact his good friend Peter. I am so glad that he did.

One goal of our trip was searching for information on my husband’s grandparents. Our guide Martin was wonderful working with us on tracking down clues and providing useful information. His experience working with previous clients and his knowledge of the history of Slovakia was a true asset. Martin also has great knowledge of the history of the other countries we visited on our trip and he is a lot of fun.
