On this tour you will be accompanied by 2 expert tour guides, Michal Razus, a professional genealogist and tour guide, living in the Eastern Slovakia and Peter Blazicek, a professional tour guide, living in the Western Slovakia. The Slovak Ancestry Tour is for Slovak-Americans they want to discover Slovakia, learn about folk traditions, culture, history and re-connect with their families / distant relatives. Michal Razus will help to find out more information about the ancestors. We even visit an unique Museum of Emigration – Kassigarda.

DAY 1
BRATISLAVA – MODRA – TRNAVA – BANSKA STIAVNICA
We’ll start our journey with a visit of an old vineyard town Modra, located in lovely Little Carpathias. A short history overview and visit of Modra’s ceramic factory (Modranska majolika) where you’ll see the process of making hand-made, hand-painted precious ceramics with folks motives. You can stop by the gift shop to buy some unique, Made in Slovakia souvenirs.
Drive to Trnava, city nicknamed as a „Little Rome“ for many churches and a rich history. A short walking tour to see the highlights, visit the Cathedral and continue through the rolling Danube plains to the 14th century mining town of Banská Štiavnica, nestled in a richly-forested valley. After the lunch break, we’ll start with a walking tour to see the highlights, such as Old Castle, the Holy Trinity square surrounded by spectacular renaissance houses.
Welcome dinner at beautiful 4 Sochy restaurant, fine dining with home-made specialties (included).

DAY 2
ORAVA CASTLE – OPEN AIR MUSEUM – HIGH TATRA MOUNTAINS
In the morning, we’ll travel through the beautiful landscapes of the NP Mala Fatra, stopping to visit the majestic fortress – Orava Castle. Orava folk music and dance will entertain us during lunch (included) at a typical Koliba, shepherd’s restaurant. In the afternoon, we’ll stroll through the 19th century Museum of Orava Village to see what village life was like when many of our ancestors left Slovakia. Driving through the picturesque Liptovska Mara lake region.
We’ll arrive at the Hotel Lomnica in the heart of the Tatry Mountains to relax and watch the sun set on the mountains.

DAY 3
HIGH TATRAS – NATIONAL PARK PIENINY – BARDEJOV / UNESCO
Enjoy the beauty of the Tatra Mountains by taking a cable car (tickets not included) from Tatranska Lomnica to Skalnate Pleso. The views are magnificent. We’ll drive to National Park Pieniny, where you’ll start rafting on wooden logs on the calm Dunajec river. You’ll relax, listen to interesting stories and legends and enjoy the spectacular views of the canyons. Drive to Bardejov, a UNESCO World Heritage town. Slow-pace afternoon walking tour through this best-preserved medieval town to see the highlights such as St. Egidius Basilica, Main square and 14th century defensive walls.

DAY 4
WOODEN CHURCH OF ST. FRANCIS OF ASSISI – KOSICE
Our first stop is in a little village Hervartov, to see a unique, 500-year- old wooden Roman-Catholic Church of St. Francis of Assisi. We’ll enjoy a guided walking tour of Košice’s well-preserved historic center and spectacular sights such as Saint Elisabeth Cathedral, Saint Michael Chapel, City Park with a Singing fountain, Lane of Arts. Afternoon free to shop and explore the thriving downtown of Slovakia’s second-largest city. Since many of our Slovak American ancestors came from Eastern Slovakia, this is a day we help travelers arrange for guides to visit their families or family villages.
Optional personal family and village visits can be arranged.

DAY 5
EASTERN SLOVAKIA – MUSEUM KASIGARDA – TOKAJ WINE REGION
We’ll drive to visit a unique Museum of Emigration where we’ll be welcomed by the founder and owner, Mr. Martin Javor who will share an interesting history of this museum.
The name of the Museum – Kasigarda is a Slovak crumb of the English Castle Garden, the main gate of the immigration office in New York, which every immigrant had to go through. “Kasigarda” accurately reflects the phenomenon of emigration. Illiteracy, ignorance of language, hardship, stress, disappointment, but above all, the hope that Kasigard represented for many of our ancestors. We’ll move to the famous Tokaj Wine Region where we start with a tasty lunch – roasted duck breasts, red cabbage and dumplings followed by a wine tasting in the wine cellar (tasty lunch and 10 samples of Tokaj wines are included). French King Louis XIV did a remark about Tokaj wine varieties – “Vinum Regum, Rex Vinorum”, Wine of Kings, King of Wines.

DAY 6
SPISS CASTLE – LEVOCA – BRATISLAVA
Leaving Košice, we’ll start the trip back to Bratislava through the rolling hills and valleys of the Spiš region with stops along the way. We’ll explore the ruins of the majestic Spiss Castle, one of the largest castle ruins in Europe. Short stop in medieval Levoca town to see the tallest wooden wing gothic altar in the world. We’ll have lunch at a Salas, a traditional shepherd’s farm. We’ll arrive in Slovakia’s capital city on the Danube in time to enjoy the charm of the Old City by night and settle into the old world elegance of the Hotel Radisson Blu Carlton, in the center of the Old City.

DAY 7
BRATISLAVA – THE BEAUTY ON THE DANUBE RIVER
Fall in love with Slovakia’s capital Bratislava with a morning guided walking tour. We’ll also travel by bus for panoramic views of the majestic Danube from medieval Devin Castle where we’ll learn about the Communist Czechoslovakia, ‚Iron Curtain‘ and daily life under the Communism.
Our last stop will be the Bratislava Castle scenic overview for views of the city and Bratislava’s long history. The afternoon will be free time to explore Bratislava’s narrow central streets and lovely plazas for shopping or people-watching, and stroll the Danube promenade to watch the ships and barges along this busy waterway.

I attended the Slovakia Ancestry Tour in May 2025. Peter and Michal were the tour guides for the trip. What a wonderful experience! We traveled across the entire country of Slovakia, from Bratislava in the west all the way to the far reaches of the east, with many great stops in between. It was great to sit back and enjoy the scenery while Peter and Michal drove and told us about Slovak history, geography, and culture. There were plenty of stops along the way with a great variety of sights to behold. I also got a chance to visit a couple of my ancestral villages along the way. I highly recommend a Best Slovakia Tours trip!

My daughter and I had a wonderful adventure in the country of her great-grandparents through the personalized and welcoming services of Best Slovakia Tours ("Slovak Ancestry Tour"). We visited historic cities like Levoca and Bardejov, and saw natural beauty of the countyside and Tatra mountains. We sampled traditional crafts (pottery in Modra), food (including my best-ever wine-tasting experience in Tokaj region), and music. We also visited the new Museum of Slovak Emigration, which would be of interest to family history buffs. Peter, a native of Bratislava, shared his perspective on the changes in Slovakia during his lifetime. He was resourceful in offering alternative experiences in inclement weather and in making suggestions for use of free time. Michal, with his background in genealogy, is helpful in finding ancestral villages and possibly connecting with living relatives. My husband and I had used his help during our 2015 travel, also with Best Slovakia Tours. Our guides have been fluent in English, which is invaluable! I highly recommend this family-owned business which has proved helpful, reliable, and a valuable resource for becoming acquainted with this beautiful country.
