Not that long time ago we visited a unique Museum Kasigarda, dedicated to emigration from Slovakia to the North America in the 19th and 20th century. Most people left their homeland from this part of the country to the “New World” as they called North America.

We organized a private ancestry tour where i was a tour guide/driver for our US client Richard and his family. Richard, from Seattle/USA had Slovak grandparents and his life-long dream was to come to the country of his ancestors.

Maypole

The 1st of May is the time for a maypole, associated with love, but also with a new beginning and the birth of a new life. May’s freshly green nature evokes youth, freshness, and energy. Trees, which have their special position among plants, symbolized the myth of the struggle of spring with winter, or life with death.

The custom is alive all over Slovakia. In the Middle Ages, maypoles were erected in front of the churches and town halls as symbols of respect. Since the 15th century, young men built maypoles and placed them in front of young girl’s homes to show interest.

But it wasn’t always just about love and showing affection, people also put up the maypoles in front of their houses as protection against evil spirits and diseases. May greenery should have brought a good harvest to the farmers.

Lovely UNESCO sights in Slovakia

In our beautiful country, Slovakia several sights have been listed on the UNESCO World Heritage list (abbreviated form for United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization), which was established in 1945 and protects the most valuable cultural and natural objects on our planet.

The list of World’s Cultural and Natural Heritage contains 812 places and exactly 7 of them can be found in Slovakia.

Let’s go through them comfortably step by step. We also include recommendations on what to visit and enjoy.

BANSKA STIAVNICA (1993)

A historical town and its technical monuments including tajchy – the water reservoirs – were listed on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1993.
This magical town located in the middle of caldera, a huge volcano that erupted millions of years ago, has a special charming atmosphere and belongs to the most beautiful little towns of Slovakia.

The history of this town since its very beginnings is tightly connected with the mining of copper, silver, and gold. Between the 13th -18th centuries, mining activity was among the most significant ones in Europe. The most famous Thurzo-Fugger mining company at the turn of the 14th-15th century belonged among the largest in the world and exported precious metals to the rest of the world.
The Empress and Queen Maria Theresa from the Habsburg dynasty visited this town and established here the very first Technical University – in the World – the Mining Academy.

Top things to do

Start your visit in the Heart of the town – on the Holy Trinity square where you can admire the Baroque Holy Trinity column and square surrounded by Rennaisance houses. Then continue to the Old castle (Stary zamok), the New Castle (Novy zamok), the Piargska gate, one of the former entrances into the medieval town. A recommended-to-do activity is a visit to the Open-air museum where you can become a miner for a while and visit the mine yourself.

While strolling up and down the historical streets don´t forget to try local specialties in some authentic restaurants and relax in the small cozy local cafes.
Include a visit to the Calvary, the 18th century complex of sacral buildings. It is indeed a magical place with breathtaking views from the top.

Among seasonal events, without a doubt the most spectacular event is in September – The Salamander festival and November’s Wine Tasting called Vinna Spacirka which is becoming popular as the venue is in the old adits hidden behind the historical houses, wine cellars in 500 years old houses.

BARDEJOV (2000)

The historical town of Bardejov was listed on the UNESCO World Heritage list for its exceptional medieval character. The town’s former fortification walls (known also as defensive walls), bastions, water moats, and entrance gates are almost intact since the 14th century.

Bardejov became a royal town and thanks to its location on intersections of ancient trade routes were one of the most important trade towns in the Kingdom of Hungary (present-day Slovakia). Up to 50 gilds were on the huge square.

Top things to do

Get to the Heart of this town which is undoubtedly the Town Hall square with the two highlights – Gothic Basilica minor of St. Egidius with precious Gothic altars and the Rennaisance former Town Hall (now a museum of the town’s history).
This spectacular square is surrounded by Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque houses and is literally a textbook of history. Visit the small and big bastion and walk along the fortification walls.

My favorite cafe is Kaviareň Tvoj Deň where you can enjoy in a very pleasant atmosphere your preferred coffee & home-made cakes. (address: Františkánska street, Bardejov)

Recommended is a visit to the Museum of History of Bardejov and Museum of Icons (both on the square) or the Synagogue.

Only 10 minutes by car you’ll find a famous Bardejov SPA with its special natural mineral water, ranking among the most important natural waters in Europe. The first written records go back to the year 1247 when the Hungarian King Bela IV added the area to Bardejov. In the past, many world-known guests visited this place – Marie Louise,- wife of French Emperor Napoleon I, Russian Tzar Alexander I, Empress-Queen Elisabeth (known as Sissi),- wife of the emperor Francis Joseph I and many other prominent European noblemen.

One of the most important treatment procedures in Bardejov Spa are drinking cures. Natural mineral waters have been classified as hydrocarbonate, sodium choride, ferrous, cold, hypotonic with increased boric acid content. Mineral waters from the following springs are used for the drinking cures: Main Spring, Medical Spring, Claire, Elisabeth, Napoleon, Hercules and Ann.

The nearby located open-air museum – Museum of Folk Architecture will give you a complete picture how was the life back in the 18-19th century as you’ll see and enter the wooden houses such as a peasant house, mayor’s house, wooden church, barns and many other objects. VLKOLINEC (1993)

A small picturesque village is perfectly hidden below the peak Sidorovo in the national park Great Fatra (Velka Fatra). It consists of 55 wooden houses and at the moment only 18 people live there permanently.

Top things to do

Stroll uphill and admire the wooden painted houses. In one of them – the peasant’s house there is a museum and you can visit its interior. Then continue up to the “main square” consisting of the 18th century and discover a bell tower, a well, rows of wooden houses, and a stream – which is also used for washing dishes and clothes. There is also a Church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary and a cemetery nearby.

WOODEN CHURCHES (2008)

We mention here 8 wooden churches that were inscribed in the UNESCO World Heritage list. These unique wooden churches are located mostly in North-Eastern Slovakia, in the Carpathian Mountain area.

They were built between the 16th – 18th century and there are 3 types:

1, Roman-Catholic

Church of St. Francis of Assisi in Hervartov village in the Presov region is one of the oldest (15the century built) and best-preserved wooden churches. From the precious interior, it is worth mentioning altars dedicated to the Virgin Mary, Saint Barbara, and Catherine of Alexandria as well as wall figural motifs of Adam and Eve in the paradise, Saint George and the Dragon.

Church of All Saints in Tvrdosin village in Zilina region is another unique 15th-century Gothic structure. What’s inside? Main Baroque altar of All saints, paintings of the Apostles, late Renaissance pulpit, and painting of St. George fighting a dragon. All from the 17th century.

2, Protestant

Back in time (end of 17th cent.), during the reign of the Habsburg ruler emperor Leopold I generally it was forbidden for the Protestants to build churches. However, later, under special conditions, they could build them if they fulfilled a list of laws called “artikula”, from this the name articular churches.
The conditions given to the protestant believers after the Congress of Sopron were: to be built only from wood, no iron nails, construction must be finished within a year, the church must be outside of city walls, and tower must be built separately.

The Protestant church of Lestiny in Zilina region was constructed in the 17th century. The type of wood was spruce. What’s inside? The richly decorated sacristy, painted marble ceiling, and illusory architecture on the walls.

Did you know that our famous poet Pavol Orsagh Hviezdoslav was baptized in this church?

The Protestant church of Hronsek in the Banska Bystrica region is an early 18th-century wooden church that was built near the river Hron in a swampy area. They planted linden trees all around to dry it.
What’s inside? Baroque altar with six oil paintings of Christological cycle dated back to 1771 and Baroque organ from 1764. The capacity of this church is unbelievable – up to 1100 people. It is really interesting that we can find many unusual motives from Scandinavian architecture here, therefore it is assumed that craftsmen from Norway or Sweeden participated in its construction.

Protestant church in Kezmarok town from the 17th century. What’s inside? Baroque altar with Madonna under the Cross and statues of Moses and Aaron on the sides. Ceilings are decorated with paintings of 12 apostles, 4 evangelists, and the Holy Trinity above the altar.

3, Greek-Catholic

Church of St. Nicolas in Bodruzal village in the Presov region, from17th century is surrounded by the cemetery and the walls. Inside are 18th-century wall paintings as well as preserved Iconostasis.

Church of St. Michael the Archangel in Ladomirova village in the Presov region) from the 18th century.

LEVOCA (2009)

The town’s position has always been important – on the intersections of ancient trade routes. Fortification walls, precious Highest Wooden Wing Altar of the world, and more.

Top things to do

An absolute must is undoubtedly the Roman-Catholic church of St. James (Kostol sv. Jakuba), a 14th-century Gothic structure with the highest wooden wing, late gothic altar in the world, a work of woodcarver Master Paul from Levoca (size: 18.6m high, finished in 1510, from lime wood), other side altars are even older – St. Catherine altar is from 14th century.

Worth seeing are mural paintings such as St. Dorotha story, seven deadly sins, and seven deeds of mercy (all from the 14th century).

Former Rennaissance Town Hall (nowadays museum of the history of Levoca), a cage of shame, fortification walls around the Old town. So stroll around and enjoy the beautiful burgher houses on the square. One is especially outstanding, the Thurzo house (15th century)

Save some time and walk up Marianska Hill to enjoy stunning views (it is a pilgrimage place where each July up to 500 000 people climb). You can see also a Basilica of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary there.

Did you know that this medieval gem Levoca was also visited by Pope John Paul II in 1995 (among other Slovak cities)?

In 2022 the Old town’s reconstructions have been finished and nowadays, you can truly enjoy a new pedestrian area.

SPISS CASTLE (inscribed in 1993)

One of the largest castle ruins of Central Europe lies in a beautiful area of Spiss region. Built upon the travertine hill, the history of this mighty fortress goes back to the 12 century, where it was a fort on the northern border of Upper Hungary (present-day Slovakia).

Later it became the possession of Stefan Zapolsky who reconstructed it into an aristocratic residence. Inside the castle, he built a palace, a knight hall, and a chapel of St. Elisabeth. His son, Jan Zapolsky was born at the castle, he later became the King of Hungary. Further among the famous owners were the Thurzo and the Csaky dynasties.
In 1781 a huge fire turned this castle into a ruin.

Did you know that up to 2000 people used to live in the castle?

Not far from Spiss castle, there is a unique religious place called Spiss chapter – nicknamed as Slovak Vatican. Since the 12th century, church life was organized from here by the bishops, provosts, and canonists.

The dominant is the Late Romanesque – early Gothic St. Martin Cathedral from the 13th century. Inside you can find 8 altars some of the original Gothic. In 1995, Pope John Paul II visited this place too.

Spiss podhradie – the area under the castle was also listed in Unesco.

Zehra church in the village nearby with precious Roman-Catholic church of the Holy spirit with precious interior and Tree of Life frescoes representing Old and New Testament.

It is definitely worth seeing all these Spiss gems and combines this trip with a visit to Levoca town.

CAVES (inscribed in 1995-2000)

Dobsinska Ice cave

(located in National Park Slovak Paradise in Presov region) is one of the world-famous caves. Discovered in 1870 by Mr. Lang, Mr. Mega, and Mr. Feher.

You can admire ice stalagmites and columns. In the Great Hall, the thickness is as much as 26.5 meters The trail is 515 meters long and the tour takes 35 minutes.

Did you know that in Dobsinska Cave electrical lights were used among the very first in the world?

Domica cave

Lies in the Kosice region. It is 5.080 meters in length and forms a single entity with the Baradla Cave in Hungary. The cave is home to 11 kinds of bats.

Gombasecka cave

Lies in Slovak Karst in the Kosice region, was discovered in 1951.

What to admire here? Above all, the thin sinter ”feathers”, which are in places as much as 3 m long. Other forms of stalactites and stalagmites.
The trail is 530 meters long and the tour takes 30 minutes.

Jasovska cave

There are interesting chambers, pagoda-shaped stalagmites, and waterfalls. Different species of bats live in the cave.
The trail is 720 meters long and the tour takes 45 minutes.

Ochtinska aragonite cave

Located in the Kosice region was discovered in 1954.

There are only 3 such caves in the world – in Slovakia, Mexico, and Argentine.
You can admire a variety of aragonite ornamentation.
The trail is 230 meters long and the tour takes 30 minutes.

NATIONAL PARK POLONINY (2007, 2011)

Located in northeastern Slovakia at the borders of Poland and Ukraine, creates Primeval Beech Forests of the Carpathians.

The forests have beeches of record size, up to 58 meters tall and very thick, and many animals hard to find elsewhere.
From the animals, there are wolves, bears, lynxes, bison.

FUJARA

Fujara is the most typical Slovak musical instrument. It was included by UNESCO in the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Fujara is an extremely long flute (up to 1.8m long) with three finger holes played by Slovak shepherds, is regarded as an integral part of the traditional culture of Central Slovakia.

Slovakia is considered to be the place of origin of this instrument, especially the region of Poľana (central Slovakia).

Traditionally, it is made completely by hand from deciduous trees such as alder, maple, locus tree.

You can see the Fujara performances every year during the summer Folklore Festivals in Detva and Vychodna village.

On the picture, Dusan Holik, famous and talented fujara player from Ocova traditional village, who unexpectedly passed away in 2017 at the age of 58. Back in the years 2016, 2015, 2014 he showed and introduced to our clients how to play this unique music instrument. Fujara – often called “the queen among folks musical instruments”

is a long wooden flute with three holes reaching a length of about 180 cm. It is made of dry wood, especially elder (baza), maple (javor), ash (jaseň), or locust (agát).
In the past, it was the musical instrument of shepherds who played it while they were away in the mountains for a long time. They meditated about their feelings and desires with it. Its velvety melancholy voice is able to express Podpoľanie human soul, but also soothe grazing sheep perfectly.

As with any musical instrument quality of a long shepherd’s pipe is evaluated mainly by its sound but its artistic side is also remarkable.
Some long shepherd’s pipes are simple, without decoration, other with ornamental decoration covering the entire surface of the long shepherd’s pipe.

The ornament contours are cut in wood and colorfully decorated with nitric acid, rarer way of decorating is deep notch cut or discharging narrow strips of thin brass sheet ornaments. In the past, every maker was using his own ornaments and manufacturing process. Every long shepherd’s pipe is original unique work.

Where do I start our tours?

I walk to the Heart of the Old town – to Town Hall square. I look around and enjoy the atmosphere. From 3 sites the square is surrounded by colorful fairy-tale houses (former burgher houses) and there are 2 dominant buildings – Basilica of St. Egidius and former Town Hall. Welcome to the most preserved medieval town of Slovakia.

TOP SIGHTS

1, Basilica of Saint Egidius – one of the dominants of the square, standing in the northern part of the square, is a Roman-Catholic gothic three-nave structure. The oldest parts of the church go back to the 14th century.
Inside, there are 11 late-gothic altars from the 15th and 16th centuries.
Two historical bells are located outside of the basilica, the smaller one – St. John was cast in 1486 was used until 1990, the bigger one – St. Urban was cast in 1584.

I recommend getting to the top of the church tower (no elevator, just stairs) and enjoy breathtaking, bird’s eye views. (there’s a small extra fee, but, it is definitely worth it).

2, Town Hall – built between 1505 – 1511, in a Renaissance style.
The town hall was once the center of the city administration, nowadays, it is an exposition of the Saris Museum here.

3, Town Hall square – the rectangular square is the Heart of the historical town. It is surrounded from 3 sides by burgher houses, St. Egidius basilica, and Old town hall. Nowadays, in these houses are lovely and authentic little cafes, town hall, Tourist information office, museum of Icon (exhibition of Iconography).

4, Fortification system – it was Louis I who ordered the construction of the fortifications in 1352.
The walls and bastions are still standing and you can admire Powder Bastion (where gun powder and weapons were stored), Royal Bastion, the North Bastion (where archives were stored), and much more.

5, Jewish Suburbia
The historical Jewish quarter – Jewish Suburbia is located out of the city walls, it contains a number of Jewish sights built between the 18th-19th centuries. The Old Synagogue, bet bidras (school), a mikvah (ritual bath). The Bardejov Holocaust Memorial is near the entrance. It is a very well reconstructed complex.

6, Franciscan church and monastery – standing near the town walls, built in the 14th century. Up to 1528, the church belonged to the Order of St. Augustin, later the Franciscan order moved in.

7, Bikur Cholim Synagogue – it is located in Klastorsk street, few steps from the Town Hall square, an example of a well-preserved synagogue. The synagogue was established in 1929 by a Jewish charitable association called Chevra Bikur Cholim.

A SHORT HISTORY OVERVIEW

The oldest written documents go back to 1241. The arrival of German colonists after the Tartar invasion (an invasion between 1240-1241 at present-day Slovakia and neighboring countries) started the development of a prospering and flourishing medieval town.

The location was strategic as it lies on an ancient trade route connecting the Baltic Sea with the Black sea.

Hungarian king Louis I gave privileges to Bardejov – a free royal town and also ordered to build city walls and bastions around the town.

As trade and crafts expanded, the 15th century became “a Golden Age” for Bardejov and is ranked among the most important towns of the Kingdom of Hungary.

On the contrary, in the 17th and 18th centuries, the series of Anti-Habsburg uprisings (uprising against the Habsburg Monarchy), the black plague epidemics paralyzed the city economically and demographically.

Nowadays, Bardejov is one of the best-preserved medieval towns in Slovakia. In the year 2000, it was inscribed into the UNESCO World Heritage list.

They remind the rich history with an annual Bardejov fair – Bardejovsky jarmok, an event held every year in August when Bardejov comes to life.
Around 4 days, hundreds of dancers, musicians, theatre, handicrafts, attractions, games, and competitions for children. Bardejov fair is the closing event of the official Bardejov Cultural Summer.

1, Bardejov SPA
Only 10min by car you can find the Bardejov Spa, located in a picturesque valley surrounded by woods. The SPA has all the conditions to provide appropriate treatments for the respiratory system, circulation conditions, and digestive tract.

2, Bardejov open-air museum (skanzen)
Near the Bardejov SPA, you can find a Museum of Folk Architecture, the oldest open-air museum in Slovakia, where you can go back in time to the 19th – 20th century.
You can admire almost 30 different objects (wooden houses of peasants, mayor house, barns, wooden churches from Upper Saris region and North-eastern Zemplin region.

3, Hervartov UNESCO wooden church
Only 15min by car from Bardejov, you can find the oldest (and best-preserved) wooden church in Slovakia, the Roman-Catholic church of Saint Francis of Assisi. It was built at the end of the 15th century in a gothic style, located at the end of the village Hervartov. Since 2008 it is on the UNESCO World Heritage list.

4, Greek-Catholic wooden churches

Skalica town (15 000 inhabitants) is notable for being one of the oldest towns in Slovakia. It is located in western Slovakia in the Trnava region, close to the border to the Czech republic.

What is SKALICA famous for?

Except for the historical beauties, it is a delicacy of Skalicky trdelník and Skalický Rubín wine. And not to forget the hockey club HK36 Skalica.

I like to start our walking tour in the heart of the town, on a triangular square called Námestie slobody (Freedom’s square). The shape of the square is unique in Slovakia.

The dominant feature is the 14th century gothic Church of St. Michael the Archangel. A renaissance tower was later added and offers extraordinary views from its balcony (after climbing 120 steps).

Next to the church is a late-gothic chapel of St. Anna from the 14th century, originally, it served as a small church in the cemetery around it. Significant burghers were buried here.

On the beautifully reconstructed square, we can admire Dom kultúry a Záhorské múzeum (House of Culture and Zahorie museum), one of the architectural beauties of Skalica. Built-in the 20th century, located near the St. Michael the Archangel church.

Designed by prominent Slovak architect Dušan Jurkovič in the art nouveau style and opened in 1905. The mosaics by Czech painter Mikolas Ales symbolizing  Czech and Slovak solidarity decorate the exterior facade of the building.

Townhall, originally a Renaissance building was reconstructed into the Baroque style, in the 19th century it got its current look in Classicist style.
Note, 1918, when the Austria-Hungarian empire came to an end, the building was used for a short time as the seat of the first Czechoslovak temporary government for Slovakia.

Among other important sights belong:

The Franciscan gothic church of virgin Mary and monastery, several times rebuilt.
The order came to Skalica in the 15th century and played an important role in its history.
To the complex of church and monastery belongs so-called “black kitchen” where the famous pastry Skalicky trdelnik is prepared in a traditional way.

The Jesuit church of St. Francis Xaverius (originally built by the evangelists)

František Xaverský represents the patron saint of the Jesuit order and the patron saint against the black plague. There are mysterious crypts underground and you can visit them. Next to the church is the monastery and school.

Bojnice chateau

BOJNICE chateau – I love this fairy-tale-looking chateau. We also visited the original Cicmany village and Trencin city. Enjoy reading!

Bojnice chateau, one of the oldest, most important, and undoubtedly most charming monuments in Slovakia. It stands on a travertine hill above the town.
Originally it was a fortified castle built in the 13th century (also Matus Cak Trenciansky owned this castle, about him more in Trencin).
The castle had many owners, since 1643 the Palfy dynasty was the owners. The last aristocratic owner, count John Francis Palfy decided to rebuild the castle into a romantic castle in the neo-gothic style. As a model, he used the French castles from the Loire valley.
On our today’s visit, we did not enter the chateau (I was on my own with my colleague, not with the tourists), but it is the highlight.

Čičmany Village

We drove to Čičmany village, surrounded by Strazovske hills and Mala Fatra national park, is famous for its wooden houses with white ornaments.
Well-worth to visit the museum in Radenov Dom.

Welcome to Trencin!
If you’re approaching this lovely city from any part, you can’t miss the mighty Trencin castle located on the rock high above the Old town. The castle belongs to one of the biggest castles in Europe and it is well preserved with fortification bastions, entrance gates, and different palaces.

Mathew’s Tower

Our visit starts with walking up to the Trencin castle. There are few narrow streets leading to the castle or you can use a covered staircase (16th century).

Trencin castle is the dominant of Trencin city and the whole region. In the old days, it ancient trade routes connecting Hungary, Central Slovak mining towns with Czechia and Poland.

Trenčín Castle

From all the owners of this castle, the most famous was Matus Cak Trenciansky (13-14th century), nicknamed as well as the Lord of the Vah river and Tatra Mountains.  He used to own around 50 more castles. We climbed on the very top of the castle, in the so called “Matus’s tower” from where we can enjoy stunning views of the whole region.
Other castle owners, king Louis from Anjou built here Loui’s palace, king Sigismund of Luxemburg built Barbara’s palace, at the end of the 15th century, the castle owner became Stefan Zapolsky who started with many reconstructions.
Further you can see the Barracks (used to house garrison and as a storage place for munition) Cannon bastion (used for protecting the bridges of the Vah river), Well of Love (and the famous legend of love between a Turkish man Omar and his beautiful young lady Fatima. Fatima was a prisoner of the castle during the times of lord Stefan Zapolsky. For Omar to free Fatima, he was tasked with digging a water well into the hard rock of the castle which he and his companions succeeded after many years. When Omar carried the newly freed Fatima  away from the castle, her veil got stuck on a rose bush.
The oldest inn in Trencin was called The Veil and was built on the same spot. Nowadays it is there restaurant Fatima.

Piece’s Square

Beautifully reconstructed square connecting Hotel Elisabeth with the Lower gate/ City tower. Full of great ice-cream places, bars, and restaurants.

THE ROMAN INSCRIPTION

What is this mysterious inscription on the rock beneath Trencin castle?  The inscription was discovered in the 19th century, nowadays, it is visible through the window from Hotel Elisabeth. It says that 855 Roman soldiers in the year 172 won a battle over Germanic tribes. This is the easternmost evidence of the Romans in Slovakia.

CITY TOWER

The tower was a part of the city fortification system built in the 15th century, called also a Lower gate (today City tower). We recommend climbing to the top to get the views of Trencin castle, the parish church of Virgin Mary and Piece’s square – the main square of Trencin.

THE PARISH CHURCH OF THE BIRTH OF THE VIRGIN MARY

It belongs to the oldest sacral objects in the city, it was a part of the former city fortification. Originally gothic, several times rebuilt.

THE PIARIST CHURCH OF ST. FRANCIS XAVIER

In the western part of the Piece’s square, there is a Roman-catholic church of St. Francis Xavier (originally, a Jesuit church, later Piarist) belongs to the most beautiful sacral baroque monument of Slovakia.
The patron saint of the church, St. Francis Xavier is also the patron saint of the Trencin city.

EXECUTIONER’S HOUSE

It is the only preserved building of this type in Trencin city which was not many times rebuilt.
It is believed that in this house in the 17th century, a town’s executioner lived here and part of the building was a prison.
Today, it serves as a museum where you can see some torture instruments and swords.
